When the clutch lever doesn't snap in, most likely problem is the adjusment has changed or something has come loose inside. The one to the front of the tractor is a clutch/brake and the one to the rear is the pinion engage lever. On a D6 9U and all the CAT's smaller than that, there are 2 levers that are used to connect the pony to the main engine to crank it. What model tractor do you have? The reason I ask is you mention a 2 speed which sounds like a D7 or D8 with the upright pony motor instead of the D6 with the horizontal opposed 2 cylinder. Seems to me that I remember occasionally sticking my finger in a hole (1" pipe thread plug? ) to get some gears to line up and slide into place before hauling on the clutch. Try the bulletin board on the Antique Caterpillar site. The level doesn't feel like it pushes as far as it used to push. I went to start it today, and the lever that I push forward to engage a clutch, I think, so that the pony motor turns the big motor over, doesn't do anything. He said that it started up fine, he shut it down and went to restart it and it wouldn't start. A guy called me and wanted to buy it, and I told him he could go look at it. I just bought it from a neighbor and it has started fine. Hi - I am not very knowledgable about Cats, but I have a problem with an old D6 9U.
